In 1521, as the mighty city of Tenochtitlan fell under siege by Hernán Cortés, Cuauhtémoc led a valiant defense, fighting until the end with unwavering loyalty to his people. His refusal to betray the sacred treasures of the Aztecs, even under torture, immortalized him as a hero of fierce dignity.
