The second year of issue 1987 Silver Eagle become more difficult to find in attractive condition with each passing year. This coin has been struck through a foreign substance, likely improperly applied grease that is used to ensure the planchets do stick to the striking dies. This led to a significant portion of the design being ommitted, or as we like to call it, a "Half Shield". It's extremely uncommon to find a strike through error of this magnitude.
