1883 Shield Nickel Philadelphia - NGC PF65 CAC

The 1883 Shield Nickel is one of the final issues of the classic Shield Nickel series, minted in limited numbers at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of just 5,419 pieces, this proof strike is a sought-after rarity that holds a special place in U.S. numismatic history. Certified by NGC as PF65 and approved by CAC, this coin represents both outstanding preservation and top-end quality.

Beautifully struck with sharp details and rich eye appeal, this example showcases the artistry of the Shield design, America’s first nickel series. The CAC approval places it among the finest survivors, with estimates suggesting 5 or fewer of these coins have earned the coveted CAC sticker. This makes it a highly desirable choice for collectors who value both rarity and quality assurance.

With an NGC population of only 378 coins, opportunities to own one of these scarce Proof Shield Nickels are extremely limited. The 1883 issue, being the last year of the series, adds an extra layer of historical significance for those assembling type sets or specialized Shield Nickel collections.
