The Flying Eagle Cent, minted from 1856 to 1858, holds a special place in U.S. numismatic history as the first small-sized cent produced by the U.S. Mint. It replaced the larger, cumbersome large cents and introduced a new era of coinage. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Flying Eagle Cent features a striking depiction of an eagle in flight on the obverse, symbolizing strength and freedom, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the date encircling the design. The reverse showcases an elegant wreath of agricultural products, representing prosperity.

The 1856 Flying Eagle Cent is especially notable, as it was initially minted as a pattern coin to showcase the new design and garner congressional approval. With fewer than 2,000 minted, it is considered a rare and highly coveted piece. Regular production began in 1857 and continued through 1858, making these coins relatively short-lived.

The Flying Eagle Cent was struck in a copper-nickel alloy, a departure from the pure copper composition of earlier cents, giving it a distinctive pale golden hue. Collectors treasure this series for its historical significance, beautiful design, and the introduction of small cents into circulation.
