In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting Abraham Lincoln, the late president. The year 1909 marked the 100-year anniversary when Lincoln was born. The cent was the first coin that had the design of a U.S. president. The coin is originally 95% copper. The coin was changed for a year to zinc-coated steel in 1943 as copper was needed to aid war efforts. The mint reverted it back to 95% copper until 1982. Inflation caused copper to be too expensive resulting in the composition to be changed to zinc with the outer layer being copper.\u003c\/span\u003e","brand":"RARECOINS","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50504935342249,"sku":"RC-CTV-CTV003729","price":149.97,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0746\/7522\/4745\/files\/1961LincolnCent-NGCPF69StarRDOBVERSE.png?v=1790908940","url":"https:\/\/rarecoins.shop\/products\/rarecoins-ctv-1961-lincoln-cent-ngc-pf69-star-rd","provider":"rarecoins","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
